I am indebted to More or Less.

We imagine large amounts of money as the height of a stack of US $100 bills.

$1 million – 3 foot 4 inches
$375 million – Empire State Building
$1 billion – two-and-a-half Empire State Buildings
$8 billion – Everest (5.5 miles)
$100 billion – twelve-and-a-half Everests (69 miles)
$14.3 trillion – 9,030 miles

$14.3 trillion is equivalent to spending $1 million a day – for – 38,500 years.

The programme goes on to say that although this figure is very big – so too is the US economy:

US GDP is pretty much the same size as US federal government debt.
