When I check out a song on youtube I do tend to play lots of versions, which almost certainly sound mighty similar to those unfortunate enough to be around. It’s better for all concerned to have the place to myself. Part of this is the analyst in me – wanting to make a systematic comparison and identify the best. That doesn’t necessarily mean a single best – we could be talking about several.
Tears of a Clown is in my top 10 of all time. It’s utterly fabulous in many ways all at once. Wikipedia explains it’s a collaboration between Stevie Wonder, who came up with the music, with lyrics added later by Smokey Robinson.
What’s great about this version is that it’s truly live – the vocal performance is clear and distinct
