Blackmore’s Night – in – Salisbury
Memorable for nearly being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Got to Salisbury OK – but the Playhouse and City Hall are confusingly close. I was expecting an older crowd – but two ladies in their 70s didn’t seem quite right – nor did the boat and river as part of the stage !
Half of me was pleased that Ritchie Blackmore has clearly moved on from rock; half of me wished he would play a few oldies; and half of me enjoyed the music for what it was. Curiosity now satisfied.

Qatsi Trilogy – in – Edinburgh
I am writing separate pieces about Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, Naqoyqatsi on the main blog. As well as three films over three days there was a talk by Philip Glass who, it seems, still has plenty on, at age 74. My question about his evolving relationship with the ‘musical establishment’ could have prompted a more interesting reply.

Amadou & Mariam – in – Manchester
This was memorable for being performed in pitch black. Amadou & Mariam are from Mali and are both blind. It was unusual to experience a concert in these unique circumstances. I did think about the gift of sight – but did not gain anything musically. I did wonder about how the concert might end – in fact – subdued lighting was provided – and was a significant enhancement.

Catch the Rainbow – in – Leicestershire
Came across Catch the Rainbow by chance – didn’t realise there was another (Ritchie Blackmore’s) Rainbow tribute band out there ! Seems to be the brainchild of Carl Sentance (?). Didn’t go in the end – main driver would have been curiosity – may try later.

Echoes of Floyd – in – Market Deeping
Echoes of Floyd are a Pink Floyd tribute from Peterborough – and are rather good – yes really ! This was their 4th ever gig –  had previously seen them (3rd ever gig) on 30 April. That was memorable (a) for being a revelation – ‘rather good’ understates their quality, and (b) for being bl**dy cold (outdoor gig unbeknownst to me). As good as before.

Limehouse Lizzy – in – Peterborough (Key)
Had seen Limehouse Lizzy in Peterborough Broadway a few years ago – and made a note to see them again. Couldn’t remember why as I was never really a Thin Lizzy fan in the first place – though do like the genre and The Boys Are Back In Town.  They play good guitar music really well – and – crucially – are fortunate to possess an extremely engaging front man – makes them special.

22 May 11
Rush – in – Birmingham (NEC)
Definite fan of Rush circa 1975-1981. Thereafter didn’t keep track of their music or activities – until Nov 2010 when I spotted they were on tour ! Decided a Rush show would probably be a good show and signed up. Key questions: would they be any good, and would the sound be OK in a large venue ? Rush were superb ! Strong opener was Spirit of Radio (studio version with concert images). Set included 1981’s Moving Pictures in its entirety – an album I knew was generally OK – but hearing it anew was a revelation – it was better live ! The final 4 tracks were sublime: Limelight, The Camera Eye, (close viewwide view), Witch Hunt, Vital Signs. There was more great stuff to come – but that was the highlight. Great sound, amazing lights, and stonking musicianship ! Good biography on wikipedia.
