Actually I was going to say ‘Not The Four Tops’ as I thought they had the Motown hit. Wikipedia reminded me it was the Detroit Spinners.
I was astonished to see what the song is about, as I thought of it as a catchy tune with a memorable chorus. According to wikipedia it’s:
About a man who cheated on his girlfriend and emotionally abused her. When she leaves, he realises that he did love her, is very remorseful about his actions, and vows to win her love back.
The Bay City Rollers are much derided of course but I did quite like their music, and certainly assumed that their 1975 hit was an original.
Seeing it performed by Frankie Valli caused me to look it up and see that it was US hit for the Four Seasons in 1965
If you want guaranteed feel-good look no further than Frankie Valli, still going strong at 81.
His concert was also educational. I had no idea that this was a Four Seasons song (1964) that pre-dates The Tremeloes (1967) by – well you do the math – as they say
Well it was less familiar to me, anyway. And it wasn’t on the song-list of Jersey Boys, which I saw – and greatly enjoyed – a few months ago
